So do you, like, take kids from their homes?”

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard that… And in case you’re wondering: no, social workers don’t just take kids from their homes.

What I can tell you is that social workers are some of the most loving, compassionate, patient, helpful, and nonjudgmental people you’ll ever meet. Not to pat myself on the back or anything…

Writing has always been one of my favorite outlets. I discovered poetry as a kid and would scribble poems on any scrap of paper I could find. Later, journaling became a key part of how I made sense of the world. There’s something about putting thoughts into words that brings a deep sense of clarity and peace.

From a young age, I also felt drawn to listening, really listening, to people and being someone they could count on. I knew I wanted to help others, and when I asked my mom what kind of job would let me do that, she pointed me toward social work. She was right, it was the perfect fit.

I started my professional journey as a social worker in North Dakota, supporting individuals and communities through some of life’s hardest challenges. Today, I’ve expanded my reach and now work internationally to support the helpers, the advocates, first responders, service providers, and professionals who show up every day for others.

This blog is my space to bring together two lifelong passions: helping people and writing. Here, I share honest stories from the field, practical tips I’ve picked up over the years, and reflections that might just help you see your own path a little more clearly. My hope is that by reading these posts, you’ll feel supported, encouraged, and maybe even inspired.

Whether you’re in the trenches of this work or simply someone who wants to better understand it, welcome. I’m glad you’re here.

Follow along:
Facebook
Pinterest
Insta
LinkedIn
MelKai Consulting, LLC

-keep shining

{The blog posts and perspectives on this website are those of Melissa Kaiser and do not necessarily reflect the views of her employer(s).}

“Social worker, huh?
